TENDON PAIN AND INJURY TREATMENT IN LANARKSHIRE.
Recent research has changed the way we approach tendon rehabilitation. The most effective treatment now focuses on properly loading the tendon with specific exercises, rather than techniques like friction massage or excessive stretching that can aggravate the condition.
Team MT are up-to-date on the latest research and best practices for treating tendon injuries. We're committed to helping you recover effectively with evidence-based methods.

WHAT ARE TENDONS?
Tendons are tough, cord-like tissues made of collagen and a supportive matrix that connect muscles to bones. When tendons are damaged, it can lead to tendinopathy, a condition that causes pain, decreased function, and limited range of motion. Tendinopathy, which can also be called tendinosis or tendonitis, involves the breakdown of the tendon’s collagen structure.
While tendinopathy can affect any tendon, we commonly see it in sports-related injuries, particularly in the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, hamstring tendons, and the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder.

It's important to note the difference between tendinopathy and tendinosis. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, tendinopathy refers to general tendon pain and dysfunction without structural damage, while tendinosis indicates actual damage to the tendon. Both conditions often arise from overuse, sudden changes in load, aging, or muscle weakness.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF TENDON PAIN AND INJURIES?
Tendons are often injured during sports, especially when there is a sudden change in load, such as during pre-season training or when switching to a different playing surface. Tendons are not fond of abrupt changes, and when caught early, they can recover well with appropriate loading. However, if left untreated and allowed to become a chronic issue, the recovery process can become more difficult and take longer.

In more severe cases, tendons can rupture, which may require surgery to repair, though not always. For example, an Achilles tendon rupture typically takes around 9-12 months for full recovery and return to previous activity levels.

Tendinopathy is common, particularly in runners who experience a sudden increase in load. We frequently see tendinopathy in athletes involved in jumping sports, as well as in upper-limb athletes like tennis players and throwers. Another type of tendon injury is tenosynovitis, which is inflammation of the tendon sheath, often caused by repetitive strain injuries (RSI) in areas like the wrist and thumb.
